Dreams of war tend to reflect the idea that there is no peace in the mind; that the ideas or concepts being held are conflicting in some way.

The guy would represent an idea you have. Here he seems to be someone fighting on your side, helping you to resolve a conflict. He would thus suggest an idea that have been using to help resolve some difficulty. Once the mental difficulties have been settled, this idea or particular way of thinking that has given you moral support, may no longer be needed. (he says goodbye).
