Urine is released normally into the gastrointestinal system by the liver, whereupon it's metabolised by urea-splitting bacteria.
The ammonia is absorbed by the digestive system and back into the blood, where once again the liver must convert the ammonia into urea.
There have been studies showing that supplemental urea given to volunteers improved glycine status in people on low protein diets.
