Hi Everybody,
I'm almost 3 years post removal (Yay! It feels so strange and great to write that!) and am hardly ever on here anymore, but feel an obligation to share good news when it happens. A lot of people stop posting here when they feel better, which is a positive thing, but it may also give the false impression that hardly anybody gets better.
My good news, almost three years post: I had my first "normal" period in I can't remember how long! Full disclosure, I have had irregular periods my whole life, and when I wasn't on Mirena, I took continuous birth control for years, meaning my poor body is not exactly primed to menstruate normally.
After Mirena removal my periods became somewhat regular for the first time ever. I couldn't predict them by calendar, but I could be relatively sure that I'd get one once a month. (As a teenager I'd maybe have my period 3 or 4 times a year at wildly unpredictable intervals). Despite their regularity, I also had the sneaking suspicion that in my early 30's I'd hit premature menopause or had PCOS, since I would spot brown blood for about a week and have terrible moodswings and breast tenderness, then have one day of heavy flow with about 24 hours of cramps that would leave me incapacitated and occasionally hunched over a toilet vomiting all night. This seemed like a small price to pay after the nightmare of Mirena, and I felt like I could live with it.
Fast forward to this month. Sore breasts and moodswings: check, but no spotting. Then, somewhat miraculously, I woke up one morning with mild back pain and was having a normal period with red blood, which lasted for four days (this looks like the last day). My mood swings vanished and I have had a wonderful feeling of well-being and calm. My cramps have been mild. The last time this happened I was probably 19.
Who knows if this trend will continue, but I hope it will and is a signal of returning health and the possibility that I don't have PCOS and am not premenopausal.
The best weapon for Mirena recovery is definitely time, but The changes in my lifestyle these past months have also been pretty extreme, and might have been for the better. I moved to a new city and quit the desk job I've held for 8 years, saving enought money to be unemployed for awhile. During these past months I have been able to sleep 8 hours a night every night and have been the most physically active I've ever been -- spending my days running, biking, and training for my first foot race in April. This time off is a luxury I would never have been able to afford when I was at my sickest, but I think has helped pull me through the final leg of recovery. Likewise, I was unable to really run or bike for years when I was using mirena and the horrible years after removal, but now that I can, I feel like physical activity is increasing my health exponentially.
I hope this helps some of you who feel like you may be taking a long time to get better. I thought I was a recovered as I was maybe going to get, but this last month proves that whether I hope for it or not, my body continues to heal.
