I discovered my hyper-thyroid in May 05 and have been challenged in figuring out how to treat it. And here is what my rules are regarding my course of action.
1. It is MY body and MY thyroid - so I DO know how to make the best decision.
2. I have no insurance and have not seen an alapathic (MD) physician in over 25 years. (I am a 62 year young grandma). So I am in a whole new territory here.
3. I found a wonderful Integrated Medicine physician - which means she combines alternative healing with western medicine. SHE listens to me. WE work together.
4. I won't have RAI or surgery. Everyone I know who has had one or the other - has more problems after the procedure than before. The Endrochrinologist I went to blew my methods out of the water - so I am not going back. Again this is MY body and MY thyroid. It doesn't deserve to be hacked on or radiated. It deserves to get well and it can.
5. I know there are lots of good things I am doing that are making me feel better and the blood work is showing up as improved. They require me to change my lifestyle and my diet.
6. IMPORTANT get at least 6 - 8 hours of sleep each night!!! Drink plenty of distilled or filtered water. Lots of blueberries and pure blueberry juice. Lots of brocolli.
7. Order the book at http://www.gravesdisease.com. There are wonderful hints inside. Herbals, Homeopathics, diets and explanation of what the disease does. (there is an herbal blend that is recommended however that is not appropriate for hyperthyroidism called Alvidar - it's use is for hypo-thyroidism)
8. Find a supportive colon hydrotherapist (gravity flow equipment is the best) who will guide you in a series of Colon Cleanses and follow up with routine sessions about one every 6 weeks. Also consider liver cleanse along with the CH sessions. Do just do by-mouth cleanse products - they only scratch the surface and often cause inflamation and discomfort. CH is a very soothing and healing experience!!
9. Listen to your body. What does it want? What does it need? If you have constant hot flashes, then get an ice pack and place it between your knees to cool off. If you are too cold - sit with a heating pad.
10. If you are taking PTU or Tapazole - READ THE SIDE AFFECTS. When you start to experience side effects consider lowering the dose a bit and up the foods or herbals that work well with this.
11. Reflexology - learn to do it for self, or have a loved one learn. It's awesome. Massage is important. You want to encourage your adrenals to drain and flow.
12. Understand that there is no cure - but there is the ability to control and nurture your body back to health. You will address one symptom and another will pop up - do deal with that symptom - it's taking one at a time.
Understand that with hyperthyroidism, your body thinks that your thyroid is a bad thing and begins to attacks it; your thyroid answers back and says, "hey wait a minute!!!" and fights back by bombarding the body with every hormone imaginable. This creates the throid storms. Western Medicine then gives medication to shut the thyroid completely down. DUH we do need it !! Well then what happens is that you go the other direction and develop the symptoms of hypo-thyroidism or suffer the side effects
There are no easy answers and everyone is different. Our society is so used to asking Drs for immediate answers and not doing the research ourselves. You have to take responsibility for this condition and figure out what works for you.
I have discovered that it is mostly about my body needing me to pay attention for a change. Rest, diet (organics!!), relaxation and PATIENCE!!
Love and lght
Eve
