The dithiol chelators tend to be able to chelate several heavy metals reasonably effectively. However they will not necessarily be equally effective at chelating them.

Furthermore some cheators might not be very effective at chelating a particular HM but might be able to mobilize or kick it up to some extent.

Also the chelators don't hold onto HMs perfectly. The drop the HM periodically and so can result in what is sometimes referred to as redistribution.

Redistribution is especially dangerous with mercury--Hg. If you mobilize Hg from your arm where it is not doing much damage, it could end up damaging your thyroid, adrenals, liver, brain, etc. Some parts of the body hold onto it quite tightly. It is somewhat like trying to dust your dining room table with a leaf blower. You'll remove some dust but you'll likely end up with more dust on your chandelier that is much more difficult to clean.

So just because you use lipoic acid to remove neuropathy-related arsenic, you have to take into account that LA is a powerful chelator of Hg. That makes it dangerous if not used in a safe way. It cause *more* Hg to be moved into the brains of these mice when used inappropriately.
