At 42, I experienced my first, non-abcessed Bartolin cyst. The cyst was a result of hormonal changes from recent gynecological surgery and a subsequent yeast infection, again as a result of the hormonal changes. I spoke with my GYN surgeon and he advised no surgery for the cyst, especially as it did not appear to be infected. Instead, he recommended warm baths and to use a heating pad on the area, explaining that you want to let the base of the gland open and allow the fluid to drain out naturally.

After two days, my pea-sized "lump" has reduced to being no longer easily palpable. I used baths morning, as soon as I got home at night and right before bedtime. In between the two evening baths, I used a heating pad. I did not try the tree oil, lavender or other herbal remedies some have suggested, but only because I didn't need to.

My doc did note that women tend to become more prone to these cysts once they have a first one. While I need to be vigilant in the future, he thought that the combination of the hormone imbalance (which will go away as I return to normal) and the yeast infection (which is now cured), were the primary causes and are thus likely not going to repeat together.

I share my story because a) I found directions here on how to deal with the cyst that helped a great deal and wanted to add my experience on the use of a heating pad and b) we can sometimes wonder how these things happen and realizing how much my hormones played a part in mine - not something I saw in any of the online literature - I thought it may have some relativity to other women suffering.

This was scary after I just had a cancer scare, so I feel badly for anyone going through it. Please take care.
