>i have unexplainable pains i am trying to figure the cause of ...please, someone reply?

>for a long time i have had a vague pain in my left, low abdomen (sometimes it feels like a pressure from within against my abdominal wall, sometimes it feels a little lower, almost above my hip joint and sometimes feels like it's behind my hip bone ...and sometimes i get a warming, almost burning, in my legs ...not down the back of the leg like sciatica, generally throughout my legs and even my groin) and, coupled with my history of constipation, i thought i could have caused a hernia - but i can feel no "bulge" (although that side of my abdomen i do think is pushed out more than the other) and i sometimes get the same, though lesser, pain on the other side now...

>...plus, i realized that, all my life i kind of never had to urinate like other people - i didn't ignore my urges, i just didn't feel the need ...and over the past week, i was at a real crisis with the swelling on the left side (and especially, if i held my pee for any amount of time), and not much pee was coming out and it was very dark. (and also, i have substantial swelling - as does my father - of the ankles).

>so i thought this must be from my kidneys

It hasn't happened to me, but I have heard of kidney patients not being able to urinate because their kidneys weren't functioning well enough to produce the urinary fluid. Television commentator Keith Olberman's father started his downhill progression with a total inability to urinate for something like a day or more. He was helped by being given a full-loop diuretic, Lasix, maybe by intravenous solution. You might try drinking some parsley water and see whether this helps a bit but if it doesn't get much better quickly, your doctor ought to know about your problem.

I have some experiences that might or might not be related to yours.

I'm a kidney patient but I have no particular reason to believe that my own hip/back/leg pain problems are related to kidney disease. My kidney specialist knows about the hip/back/leg pain that sent me to an orthopedic specialist a few months back and he didn't respond. I believe he would have if that particular problem were likely to be related to kidney disease. The pain I had in the hip/back/leg went down the front of the leg, and past the knee for a bit on the front inside.

My orthopedic specialist took an xray and told me that the pain was either a hernia (his best bet) or soft tissue damage that needed time to heal, not Arthritis in the hip, or at least not enough to cause the amount of pain I was in. He showed me a diagram illustrating the membrane separation between the upper leg and the hip and then sent me to a surgeon for an exam for a hernia. According to the orthopedic specialist, pressure on the nerve where the leg and abdomen meet cause exactly that kind of pain, and the excruciating pain with a sneeze is a strong hint of a hernia there. The surgeon sent me for a C-scan, which showed that I simply have an ultra thin membrane there, not a broken or strangulated one. I'm still living with hip pain that goes down the leg. It's especially horrible when I sneeze.

In other information that might or might not be related to your situation, my kidney specialist sent me to a urologist, who ended up sending me to a clinic where they decided that I needed to learn how to go to the bathroom again, using biofeedback--the reason being that urinating is a terrific bearing-down strain for me. I'm in too much pain in the area to simply relax the way I once did and as most peope do. Often there's plenty of fluid but I can't release anything. My hip/leg problem is always worse after all the straining too. I notice that if I wait too long, it's harder, not easier, to make anything happen.

It's possible that you have some neuropathy going on so that you don't feel the urge to urinate normally? If that were the case, then you might feel the need to strain to relieve yourself, the same as I do. Or not, I don't really know. But know that you are not alone in the hip/leg pain and it's really hard to urinate when that pain is there. You have my sympathies!

Best wishes,
Mary

P.S. I also have terrible swelling around the lower legs and ankles here too, but I've had it so long that my skin there has turned into *hard* balloons that have a dehydrated cracked sandpaper feel to it. It's extremely hard to flex the ankles very much under these conditions.
