Hey ParrotGirl,
I just wanted to send you some support. I've been treating PCOS with Iodine seriously for the last month and it IS getting better already. I first tried Iodine cautiously about 2 years ago--12.5 mg a day--and had horrible Depression like you so I gave up and tried a ton of other routes (liver cleanses, juicing, low-carb diets, naturthroid). I recently started reading up on it again and was struck again by how much sense it makes that PCOS is a result of Iodine deficiency (many of us PCOSers, myself included, suffer from skin cysts as well, which also seem to be related to lack of iodine.)
Now that I've rediscovered iodine, I've jumped in and followed Trapper's advice: I take at least 100 mg a day, and aim for 200 mg, but am very religious about salt water pushes and companion nutrients. So far, I'm really impressed with the results. My skin is more clear than it has been since I was 11. I have NO Acne cysts right now. I can't tell you what a miracle this is for me. And like you, I feel a lot of stuff going on in my ovaries, which I'm taking as a good sign.
As far as detox, Depression has been much less of an issue on this new, higher dose protocol. I've been cranky, but not depressed. I attribute that to the salt flushes and companion nutrients, but I also wonder if it's somehow worse when sticking with the very low dosage....like it somehow prolongs the detox instead of just getting through it.
I'm not saying you should do what I'm doing--follow your intuition for your body--but just wanted to let you know you aren't alone in trying to fight PCOS with iodine. Hopefully we can support each other. Good luck.
