The amino-acid L-lysine has been shown to slow down and retard the growth of the Herpes virus or "cold sores": it is also reported to prevent viral replication.

Personally my first choice in ridding the body of any lingering/dormant/active viral infection (including herpes) is with the internal use of Colloidal Silver for about 10 days prior to any fast, and which is effective at killing over 650 pathogens/virus' and harmful bacteria.
The good news is that water-only-fasting will boost and strengthen the immune system and aid your body in overcoming any foreign and unwanted pathogens.

On a water-only-fast any herpes infection will initially become worse as an effort by your body in expelling the virus, and usually made manifest in your skin: in many cases the face is affected esp' around the mouth/nasal area. This should be welcomed as a detox measure although rather unsightly.

I concur with edberg in not taking anything other than water on your fast, as taking anything other than this (L-lysine for example) will trick the body into believing it is in "eating mode" and greatly diminish the results you desire.
