The FT reported last week that “gold dealers” said that banks – “primarily based in France and Italy – had been actively lending gold in the market in exchange for dollars.”

(That gold they are selling is leased gold and exists only on paper. One day the paper gold market will explode sort of like Vesuvius but bullion will survive a paper fire.)
