You're welcome Grace.
Losing 2 out of 6 root canals in a couple of years is way too many. In my experience a well made porcelain to metal crown should last approximately 25-30 years or so on average but sometimes it would fail sooner for unknown reasons but not in a year or two.
Myself had #18 extracted a couple of weeks ago which had a gold inlay that i made myself 15 years ago. My choice was to extract it or go with root canal and crown it. I chose to extract it because i don't trust dentistry in my area.
There are many reasons why a crown would crack. If it's a porcelain to metal crown, it could be that the alloy wasn't treated properly and/or was contaminated (by touching it) before applying the porcelain. It could be that the metal is too thin in one section or it could be that the dentist did not prep the tooth properly. There are many reasons for a cracked crown and by looking at the cracked crown, we can narrow down the possibilities.
I wish you good luck in your dentist hunting adventure!
