I will agree with us needing to have awareness of God, and it can be a challenge in our busy days. People with illness, very much seek rest....it's most appealing than talking about anything that requires effort on our parts.
The rest that I speak of is that which the bible takes us through, the different stages of rest, such as the Promise land rest, Sabbath rest, Covenant rest, Spirit rest and our final stage of rest which will be when we go home, when we shed this earthly body.
(I know you get this next part but I share for others that may be reading) My covenant rest comes from being in Christ and accepting what He did for me on the cross. Each stage of rest needs to be understood as we move forward into Spirit rest.
Hebrew 4:1 "Therefore, let us fear lest, while a promise remains to enter into His rest, any one of you should appear to have failed to obtain it."
In other words...failed to obtain salvation through Christ, we didn't enter His rest because we refused to accept the Truth of who He is and having Trust in what He did for us.
However, as long as we are in the flesh/body we will strive but God's Spirit within us will help us do the things we can not do for ourselves, if we seek Him and know His will and do His will. (being doers as well as hearers of His Word.)
Colossians 1:28-29
28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. 29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.
Philippians 1:27
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
Galations: 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexua| immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
In illness, God's rest penetrates our very soul to uplift us to let us know that Christ is still working through us even in our weakness. He has not forsaken or left us on our own to deal with it. He has made a way. We may call this the Spirit rest.
