I'm curious, why wouldn't something like a regular liver cleanse be helpful for him? Open up the liver and get it working better?
Also, not sure if it does me any good as I don't have liver issues, but I try to drink milk thistle tea regularly. Supposedly milk thistle helps protect the liver, as well as stimulate regeneration in the liver.
Just recently there were lots of storms in the DC area. The Washington Post had a couple of articles about people that picked and consumed toxic, wild mushrooms. Normally this causes liver failure and the need for a transplant.
Instead, the doctors treated it with a milk thistle-based drug by IV. Of course in that concentration, who knows if it had side effects that they didn't want. But it apparently saved their livers, at least from what I could tell. So I'm more of a believer in milk thistle now. Here is one of the articles, and you can search for the other one on the WP:
