Ok, I am really really really tired of dealing with this ongoing depression! I think, as I did with my insomnia, I'm going to have to resort to drugs to manage this ... or go back to drinking.

The problem with depression is that is has SO MANY causes.  This can make it difficult to actually figure out what is the best way to go about treating the cause.  It is not as simple as low serotonin as the doctors often think.  It can also be low dopamine, low norepinephrine, low acetylcholine, low prostaglandins, high prolactin, low adrenals or thyroid, hormone imbalances, many medications, nutritional deficiencies, SAD, low cholesterol, etc.  This is why it sometimes requires some experimentation and maybe even some lab tests to get to the root.  For example, even something like pernicious anemia can cause depression by blocking B12 absorption leading to decreased SAMe production and thus lower methylation to produce neurotransmitters.  But this is not something that you can just look at a person and tell.  This requires testing to determine if this is a possibility.

Something you can check yourself though is your basal body temperature as hypothyroidism is a common cause of depression in women, especially after menopause.

Overall, which is worse of the two? Or does it depend on the kind of anti depressants and/or alcohol?

Alcohol is a depressant since it also increases GABA activity suppressing neurotransmitters.  And antidepressants can cause suicidal behavior, especially when people first start on them.  The antidepressant drug class also has more side effects than any other drug class.  They should only be used as a last resort in my opinion.

Isn't wine healthy to a point?

Not really.  The "health" benefits of wine are really attributed to the phytoestrogen resveratrol.  But you have to drink over 30,000 glasses of wine to get any benefits from the resveratrol and by then you and your liver would be gone.  Wine is also known for its high lead content.

Which anti depressant drug is the least damaging?

None.

Yes I have done most all the natural sups for depression and combos of them and none worked. My diet is very good and I still take a good amount of sups for overall health. I don't know what is causing it, I only know I've dealt with it on and off my entire life. My dad, brother and sister all suffer with it as well.

I need input, personal experiences, advice and direction before I call my doc SOON.

Again I would recommend checking your basal body temperature first to see where your thyroid is at.  If that is normal then get some lab work up for starters to get clues as to other possibilities.

Being depressed all the time is ... very depressing!!

Although stress does not help either, especially since it suppresses the adrenals and thyroid.

One other thing you may want to try is finding some place to volunteer to help keep you active and to give you more sense of purpose.  Sitting on the computer reading about people's heath problems and all the personal attacks can be depressing in itself.
