Dentists extract teeth only as a last resort and only if they can't "save it". If you extract it you will have a choice of replacing the missing tooth with a bridge, implant or a partial denture. Each with different set of potential problems, so if you have enough tooth left to support a crown, i would give it another shot with a good dentist. A well made crown should last around 30 years on average.
