APC,
Things really got started for me when I suddenly began to lose feeling in my thumbs and index fingers about 7 years ago. I also had lost a lot of strength in my rotator cuffs, and couldn't do much of a shoulder press or more than a few push-ups without pain and weakness. To do these things would only damage things worse, so I eased off. A nerve on the side of my neck was palpably swollen. I went to my GP, who prescribed Vioxx - the anti-inflammatory that was linked to heart attack deaths. Well, I stopped with the vioxx after a few days of heart palpitations (good thing I did). Then, I went to the chiropractor and after about six weeks of neck work, the feeling came back - to come and go periodically in times of stress. The nerve had definitely been swollen, but my neck was also very tight (muscle-wise), and the squeezing of vertebrae was interfering with the nerve impulses to my rotator cuffs, thumbs and index fingers.

I lived with this for a few more years to varying degrees of weakness/numbness. As I got onto a grain-free and pasteurized milk-free diet, these slowly subsided. As soon as I slipped up diet-wise, my neck got sore, shoulders weak and fingers numb without fail.

There's no way around getting off gluten (getting off all grains for awhile is best) pasteurized dairy and sugar. It's tuff, but the payoff is real health, energy and gratitude for the gift of life.

Stay away from any processed foods if you can, esp. those containing MSG, caramel colouring, corn, soy, flavour enhancers and preservatives .

I don't know about diabetes - something you'll have to check out yourself. Just eat good food - mainly meat, eggs, fish and lots of vegetables. The Weston Price Diet is worth checking out.

BTW - my guitar playing was hampered by the nerve problems, and is better now than ever. So, there's hope, eh?
All the best to you,
Bob
