Forbes just published an article bemoaning homeopathy and other "woo" alternatives to mainstream medicine.  I will post the link to the article at the worldwidehippies site (I like them better than Forbes and besides, Forbes doesn't need any more website traffic.

Nothing like a mainstream propaganda piece to get me on my soapbox!  Here is the response I posted:

No doubt there is no lack of hoo-doo and snake oil salesman out there.  HOWEVER, it is a mistake that has been made through the ages for the science of the day to think that it has anywhere near all the answers.  Plus lack of evidence is not at all the same as evidence of lack - in many instances it merely means that currrent science has not found or understood what is going on and not that it has disproven that something works.  When all is said and done, we may very well find that ideas such as healing energies, meridians, chakras, and yes, homeopathy, do indeed have scientific basis and that our science has simply not figured out how to verify and quantify the actions of such items.

For a long time, items such as accupuncture and aromatherapy were rejected by mainstream science as bogus.  But several recent studies have proven that accupuncture works and a couple of recent studies have turned conventionalone wisdom on it's head.

One study provided incontravertilble proof that aromatherapy can indeed be effective and cause measureable chemical and biological changes.  See:

"Taking Time to Smell the Roses Really CAN Ease Stress"
http://www.tbyil.com/roses.htm

In another startling study, a prominent Nobel laureate discovered a mechanism that is the basis of how homeopathy works:

Maybe homeopathy is not so absurd after all - certainly not to the point of a blanket condemnation.

When it comes to people turning away from mainstream medicine and turning to natural and other alternative remedies, mainstream medicine largely has themselves to blame.  First of all, they have a long history of rejecting and evilly suppressing any alternatives which they have not patented and controlled.  And they have lied about the safety and efficacy of their own medicines.  See:

"Modern Medicine: How Healing Illness became Managing Illness"
http://www.tbyil.com/Managed_Illness.htm

http://www.tbyil.com/drug_failure.htm

It reminds me of what happened back in the day with youth and drugs.  We were lied to about the dangers of marijuana and I have no doubt that those lies led many people to believe that they were being lied to about truly dangerous drugs as well - and we are still seeing the consequences.

As regards using alternative therapies to treat cancer, the implication of the article is not only false but shameful.  The fact is that alternative therapies can indeed treat cancer and often much more effectively than the failed mainstream paradigm of trying to cut out, poison out or burn out the mere symptoms of cancer (as opposed to addressing the root causes, getting rid of all the cancer cells in the body and insuring that cancer does not return once eliminated).  See:

"Modern Medicine versus Nature in Treating Cancer"
http://www.tbyil.com/MMvsNature.htm

A couple of facts to consider:

First, there are over 25,000 patented prescribed and over the counter medications.  Over 95% of them have side effects, and for the most part they only treat symptoms.  Often those side effects lead to other complications which require still more drugs and treatments in a never ending cycle so that by the time a man reaches 65 years of age in the US, on average he takes 15 prescribed and OTC medications daily.  In many if not most instances, it all began with one or two conditions which could have been treated safely and effectively by nature (such as changes in diet and lifestyle and perhaps supplementation).

Secondly, properly prescribed and administered drugs cause over 100,000 deaths each year.  Meanwhile, regardless of effectiveness of natural and other alternatives (and the truth is that nature can be very effective), over 100 million people in the US regularly take supplements - yet in any given year there are anywhere from zero to a tiny handful of deaths attributed to supplements.

No wonder people have turned away from mainstream drugs!
