Regardless of why you are taking it doesn't affect the chemical structure of Alpha Lipoic Acid. Whether your taking it because you like how it looks, or for an antioxidant, or to chelate heavy metals it still has the same half life and needs to be taken frequently or you will redistribute mercury.

Someone who never had any mercury exposure may be OK taking it randomly. Someone who has ever had any could have disastrous results from doing so.
