Back in the 1950's when I was young I had one uncle that had spent WWII in the US Coast Guard. Lots of stories of chasing German submarines up and down the East coast of USA.

He said that in the winter months it was cold to an extreme since the sailors normally were slightly wet. The red cross would come with some coffee and doughnuts for the officers. Nothing for the enlisted personnel. My uncle said there were times he felt like he would give a month's pay for the coffee and doughnuts.

For the rest of his life he purely hated the words "red cross".

I do give blood regularly to red cross and am appalled at the amount they charge folks for it. But I figure the blood could save someone's life.

I know several folks here that work for the Salvation Army and they are the main ones that help the less fortunate or victims of disaster
