 We can be empathetic towards others in need and still maintain healthy, strict boundaries so that we aren't used and abused by TAKERS.  

A good site that can help you to define boundaries is http://www.lovefraud.com  The true-life experiences of others who have feelings and experience remorse can help us to determine what we will, and will NOT, tolerate from others.  Just because we are able to feel for others does NOT mean that we must absorb their issues and make them our own.  If someone is drawing us into their own issues, we are allowed to back off from them and look at the whole picture.  Most often, people get into trouble because of their own choices and actions:  choosing a bad partner; overspending; getting involved in questionable practices; etc., etc., etc.
