I don't know what the whole recovery program involves for codependents but I do know this---His behavior towards you is very rude and inconsiderate. Since he told you that he would have to bail if things got complicated, then at the very least, he owed you an explanation.

That said, I suspect that part of his problem was that he got involved in this relationship much too soon. The tip off was his telling you that he was "recovering". However, once he realized this, he should have explained it to you.

At this point, I would say drop all contact with him. If, before doing so, you want to be considerate to him (unlike how he was with you), you could tell him that you are ending contact and explain why---don't leave anything out. Perhaps you can even consider telling him that he shouldn't get involved with anyone else until he was really sure he was ready.
