Possibly just slowing down and trying to take in less information may help too. We are so used to being bombarded with info all day long, I believe our mind will place little importance on something like reading a book.

Also, listening carefully to people is a big plus. People are usually thinking about what they are going to say next when someone is talking to them, rather than listening to what they are saying.
