For simplicities sake, I will use a very common example here...
To raise the alkalinity of a swimming pool, one can add Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate).
Baking Soda will also raise the pH of the pool water, however, only slightly.
To raise both the pH and and alkalinity of the pool, one would use Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) until proper pH is reached and then add Baking Soda to make further adjustments to the alkalinity if needed.
For those who do not quite understand this... Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonate) and Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) are NOT the same thing.
This is *just* another reason many people misunderstand the Alkaline\Acid balancing principles... everything is not always as it seems.
