I read somewhere that phosphoric acid has this paradoxical effects that you pointed out. The critical factor appears to be the drinking of water - if you drink coke without following it with water, it has a dehydrating effect and can cause stones to form. Drinking coke along with lots of water has the opposite effect. The PA will dissolve stones and then get flushed out by the water. Joe Barton actually incorporated this protocol into his formula.
