You can test your own blood sugar. I recommend it.

The devices are cheap, though the test strips can add up. Get yourself a bottle of 60 test strips and test yourself every morning before breakfast ("fasting blood sugar"). Also try a "challenge" where you eat something really sugary and then test yourself every 10 minutes for the next couple hours.
