["I've always heard that distilled water is not biologically active based on how distillation apparently changes the molecular arrangement"]
I have no idea what you're trying to say? Do you mean unstructured? Lacking energy? Yes, if true, then that is a benefit imo (i.e. you can choose what to do with it). And who is to say your body cannot do the structuring itself? Maybe our bodies prefer a "clean slate"? I certainly know it prefers a lower TDS level so that hydrogen can be freed for hydrating purposes, and undissolved rock solids do not accumulate in the body.
["I've also heard that it causes leaching of minerals from the body if you drink it straight"]
Frankly, I think this is generally bunk. When you consider the volume of minerals you consume and expel per day just from eating and living, the amount any is "leached" by distilled water consumption is not nutritionally relevant, except to say, you want a certain amount of "leaching," because this is how the body detoxifies. If you were to fast for many days on only distilled water you may have a concern, but that is the point of fasting, and how quickly/safely you wish to shed is entirely individual choice.
["If it's true that the leaching effect is due to the changing of the molecular structure, then I can see how it would be helpful for people in cases of detoxification. But long term I would be concerned about that effect."]
It has nothing to do with molecular structure. As soon as distilled water hits your stomach, its molecular structure is changed, so what structure would you be referring to? The "leaching effect" is the detoxification benefit of distilled water. The purpose of distilled water is to flush and clean cellular toxicity and rehydrate/nourish the cells with the fresh materials you've consumed --- and you don't want that to be temporary thing. Your cells need to detoxify constantly. Combined with nutritionally rich foods and liquids, you have the perfect match.
