Thanks hanna! I know magnesium relaxes, but I wonder how it affects the gallbladder/gallstones/sludge aspect? Does it relax the ducts, the gallbladder or what?

Magnesium relaxes muscles including the smooth muscle of the bile ducts, but also the gallbladder.  Progesterone also relaxes the gallbladder, which is one of the reasons women are more prone to gallstones.

If you want to stimulate the gallbladder then bitters and small amounts of oil with meals is the best way to do this.  Larger amounts of oil can contract the gallbladder too much leading to gallbladder attacks and possibly lodging a stone in the bile ducts if stones are present.

From my research so far it seems a 'gallbladder flush' is about the only alternative to surgery.

The so-called "liver flushes" are bogus and do not work:

I did one of those about 10 years ago and I was so sick I couldn't eat for two weeks without my heart racing and pounding. No clue why that happened?

It does not sound like you got quite as far as lodging a stone in the bile ducts, but it does sound like you set off a gallbladder attack from ingesting the oil.

I remember taking tons of valerian root to even be able to eat small amounts. Perhaps relaxation IS the key here? I even went to the E.R. twice ... and got an EKG one time and some Zantac the other time! Doctors are so ignorant!!! Guess that's why they call it PRACTICING medicine!

Anyhow, I am reluctant to repeat that cleanse!

Good news!  Again they do not work and they can be dangerous.
