You are taking a similar path to the one i took - and then i started looking at eastern religons and the idea "know thy self" that is where you need to start .
Find a meditation practice that you are drawn to and get started asap . I recommend TM although it is expensive , or Yogananda - read his auto biography. sorry gottto go no time left
