I find it interesting that in all the articles I saw regarding the link between cholesterol lowering statins and diabetes they kept downplaying the risks.  This article was a great example, which is why I posted it.  The author claims that the statins reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, yet the risk of these are increased by diabetes.  Furthermore, the author states that the statins reduce the risk of cardiovascular events while ignoring the fact that statins have been proven to increase the risk of heart failure.

In addition, statins lower cholesterol by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis by the liver, but do not reduce dietary cholesterol.  But these drugs are also known for causing liver damage.  Being that the liver regulates cholesterol levels for the body by both synthesizing cholesterol when needed and breaking it down when too high, damaging the liver by statins could theoretically increase cholesterol levels sky high by damaging the liver.

It should also be noted that high cholesterol DOES NOT really contribute to heart disease.  Arterial plaque results as a response to inflammation of the arterial lining, not high cholesterol.  On the other hand, abnormally low cholesterol levels significantly increase the risk of heart attack and strokes primarily by leading to constriction of arteries leading to decreased blood flow.
