As with cigarettes, if we could go back to square one, then without any doubt the formula for soft drinks would today be banned, no question! They are simply to toxic and extremely carcinogenic and unless you know labelling laws you are left vulnerable and at the mercy of the various government agencies to protect us (and a pretty bad job they do of it too) from misinterpreting what we read on the label. Their job is to protect business by making sure that the products they produce do not give us disease or death in a timely manor that can be traced back to any one product, making it often impossible to prove a company’s liability since disease can manifest over several years.
Food law, like other society’s such as The Law society has it’s own interpretation of words and phrases different to common language found in the Oxford English Dictionary from which one can refer.
For example the word assume is defined as To take to or upon one's self; to take formally and demonstratively; sometimes, to appropriate or take unjustly. Yet in Law this term is defined as An agreement to continue performing duties under a contract or lease. Similarly the term moot is typically defined as Subject, or open, to argument or discussion; undecided; debatable; mooted, yet in law moot is defined as Not subject to a court ruling because the controversy has not actually arisen, or has ended.
Sports, science, health, all groups define words that best suits their society or organization and food laws and labelling is no different.
We “assume” what is written on the label is plain English, wrong! As I am about to point out you have been duped to the very grave detriment of your health!
In 2009 The UK consumed 6065 million litres of carbonated drinks (43% share of the soft drinks market) a rise of 2.2% on the previous year. This translates to an average of 98.3 litres consumed per person per year. The increased risk of disease grows with their profits. So let’s break down the diseases available and understand exactly what the wording actually mean on the label of perhaps the most popular of drinks, Cola.
Typically the ingredients for cola are as follows:
Carbonated water
Sugar
Colour (caramel E150d)
Phosphoric acid
Natural flavourings (including caffeine).
The most controversial is carbonated water, controversial since in small amounts it appears to be harmless. Water is carbonated with Carbon dioxide, we expel CO2 from our lungs, we do not have any nutritional requirement for a daily infusion of CO2. Carbon dioxide does block Calcium absorption which makes the bones weak and brittle, thus we develop Osteoporosis.
Typically 330ml can of soda contains 35 grams of sugar, which is approximately equivalent to 6 teaspoons of sugar. Described commonly as a drug, an energy booster, toxic, even a silent killer, some journals report that an excess of this “drug” can lead up to 75 unpleasant metabolic changes. It causes obesity and Opioid Dependence. One 330ml can will spike your blood Sugar levels giving you an artificial high sending your body into shock excreting massive amounts of insulin which uses all the Sugar available from the body and transports it to the cells. Your BSL comes crashing down leading to serious illnesses such as, heart and Kidney disease, stroke.
The Colour Caramel E150d, it is important to firstly understand that this is a colour and not a flavour, though the manufactures could use any other colour that is not associated with food but chooses not to presumably since when reading the label we readily accept Caramel as a flavour. No doubt due to word association, we generally eat Caramel, we do not recognize Caramel as a colour unless you are an artist. This chemical is added to disguise the unsightly colours created by all the chemicals used to manufacture this killer drink. And this is where label deceptions come into play. The correct name for this laboratory made carcinogen is called Sulfite Ammonia Caramel. It is not Caramel as we have come to understand it, it is formulated by reacting Sugar with both Ammonium and Sulfite compounds, the two by products of 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole which are also found in some foods and tobacco smoke prohibit full development of organs, prohibits healthy cell growth, Inflammation of the epididymis (where the sperm is stored), tissue inflammation and studies showed that carcinogenic activity of 2-methylimidazole (2MI) was demonstrated in male and female rats and mice1
A further study from Springer showed4MI is carcinogenic inducing alveolar/bronchiolar adenoma and carcinoma in male and female mice 2
