My liver was damaged by numerous medications (to the point where it hurt very much) but after taking daily doses of a combination of Milk Thistle (AKA: Silymarin) & N-Acetyl Cysteine (AKA: NAC) my liver got much better & it does not hurt anymore. The quality of these supplements is very important (as it is with all supplements). After comparing some different brands I ended up using the Eclectic Institute brand (I buy it on the Net) of fresh freeze-dried Milk Thistle & the NutriBio brand of NAC (it is very important to buy NAC fresh because it has short shelf-life) which I get on Ebay in a container (powder form) of 100 grams for $9.99 + shipping. I am not affiliated with either of the companies of these products.
Also, regarding your doctor, you may want to consult a Naturopathic doctor (ND) to get a different opinion but ask around & find one that is highly recommended by people that you know.
