Brain and neurons purely function on glucose, it's true. However your body has the ability to convert fatty acids and proteins into glucose and also store glucose into glycogen through the liver's process of glycogenisis.

It is true that a zero carb diet is stressful on the body and of course requires energy to convert fatty acid to glucose and I certainly wouldn't use the diet for more than a few weeks or months if I was an athlete and living a strenuous lifestyle but as far as people who are sick with ill effects from carbohydrates, the brain fog and neurotoxins from eating carbs are significantly more damaging in my opinion.
