There are most likely several reasons why people are ignorant of Body Odor being a medical issue:
1. The medical establishment doesn't even know what causes it. Their typical response for those of us who suffer is, "I don't smell anything. It's in your imagination." They smell us they just don't want to say, "I don't know how to help you. Science hasn't done studies on it yet."
2. Most of the average population doesn't even know that there is a medical cause for Body Odor . Most of us didn't even know BO was a medical condition and there were people suffering just like we are until we searched on the internet. Most people assume we have BO for the most obvious reasons, poor hygiene or drugs/alcohol.
3. If we look at the entire population of the world, it seems that very few of us suffer from BO due to medical issues so not much importance is given to it. It's not in our face like say cancer of AIDS. Few articles or documentaries are written about medical reasons for having BO.
4. The are a few organizations that I've read online that are specifically looking into the causes of BO (specifically TMAU) and trying to find a cure but it takes money. Unfortunately, not much media coverage is given on the subject.
5. People are vicious to people with Body Odor because they're ignorant of the fact that there are medical reasons for having BO. They think the best way to deal with a person with BO is to harass them until they do something about it. Another reason is that people are in a constant state of stress nowadays and they easily flip and take it out on some innocent person, usually someone who is different in some way. Somewhere down the line, these people have learned to be mean or say rude comments to people who are somehow different. Viciousness is learned. We're not born being mean.
Anyone have any ideas on how to tell people it's a medical condition in a positive productive way?
