It is common to have an ultra-sound examination while fasting, that it you haven't eaten anything for at least 12 hours. At this time the common bile duct should be full of bile under slight pressure this causes the duct to expand to a size between approximately 3mm and 15mm depending upon your physiology.

The common bile duct is a very flexible tube and you might like to visualize it rather like a dense nylon stocking. A large stone will cause the bile duct to stretch wide and also shorten as it progresses through the tube.
