Initially boron was tied into the Nuke story as that is a proven method used directly on the nuke fuel to help stabilize and cool down its reactivity as used on Chernobyl. Somehow from this it was extrapolated to be a radiation protective nutrient.
Perhaps if you were radiating to the point of glowing it could be used to cool down your corpse.
