I agree with pinkcat. For many people (often me included), having one's blood pressure taken in a doctor's office can lead to high readings---due mostly to stress and worry. There is a name for that---it's called White Coat Syndrome. Pinkcat's suggestion about asking for a 24 hour monitor is a good one. For all of us, BP readings do fluctuate during the day.

I understand your reluctance to go on meds. Years ago, before the internet was around, I researched as best as I could to find a natural alternative to lowering BP. I did what I could with what I knew but still had to go on meds.

For quite sometime I was on a diuretic but my doctor took me off it---and I was glad. One side effect of diuretics---they make you more sensitive to sunlight. Thus I would start to burn with very little exposure---and I'm not that fair skinned. Unless you're having problems with water retention, I would ask the doctor to not put you on a diuretic.

All that said, if you can find a way to naturally control your BP---go for it. Just know that you will have to constantly monitor it to be sure that you are able to keep it within normal range.

However, with your vegan diet (and I imagine weight loss) you should have seen a positive reduction in your BP. I know I've been quite pleased since I lost weight, was able to exercise again and able to eat a mostly vegan diet (IBS-D had prevented me from excersing and eating more healthily) to find that despite being on BP meds, my readings have been quite good.

If you aren't seeing BP readings improvement despite your diet and losing weight, I agree with Pinkcat---perhaps genetics are at play here. So...if you aren't able to lower it naturally, meds, no doubt, will be called for.

Best of luck with everything---And kudos for being able to stick to a strict vegan diet!
