Ammonia is a base but not an alkaline ,there is a difference, alkalizing elements have an oxygen donor in its chemical structure ammonia doesn't and can be toxic in its effect!
In fact the high pH ammonia creates can be neutralized by an oxygenating alkaline element like Calcium.
