I know exactly what you mean; one are never more vulnerable than with the small ones.

But the gentlest remedy for the eye I know besides CS is actually borax. I would try it for a couple days; three times daily just one drop of saturated borax water; or if his mother is breastfeeding still you can put borax in the milk instead and drop into the eye.

One other option is of course homeopathy; you will then have to see a practioner as the symptoms and his personality are what they base their remedy on.
It works wonderfully with the small ones; and the effect lasts a long time.

The boron info I found today is the best I have read so far; it is lenghty but well worth a read. There is some info about the water concentration needed to kill protozoa / bacterias.
The contents in sea water is whopping 4,5 mg per liter!
I left this link at my work today and cant find it; so I will have to post it tomorrow.
It also adresses boron contents in food; an average of 1,9 mg is what we get from food; and an adult would have to eat type 7 kilos of bananas to get just the RDA;
it is like Iodine story over again.
