No, vitamin D3 is not a "bad" supplement. It is actually a very important supplement and quite safe in very high dosages. I have personally taken over 200,000iu daily for up to 5-7 days when I've gotten sick with the flu.

Your body can only manufacture vitamin D from the sun all year round only if you live very close to the equator. For the rest of us it is only in the high summer months that we can get vitamin D from the sun. And, you must have a large portion of the body exposed to the sun... face, arms, legs, torso .. think bathing suit or in the buff for 20-30 minutes for fair skin and longer for darker skin. All of the other crap that we've heard that all you need is your face and arms exposed for 10 minutes any time of the year and your body will make all the vitamin d it needs is wrong. It has been proven again and again by the vitamin d council.

In fact, your serum level needs to be at least 70 to keep you in reserve so that in the winter your levels don't get depleted again.

Vitamin D is very non-toxic. Gary Null proved that when he developed vitamin d poison from his supplement powder that contained 2,000,000iu (that's right 2 million!!) rather than 2,000iu in a daily dose. He took this dose DAILY for a month AND SURVIVED with no permanent damage to his body.

I took 2,000iu D3 and still my levels were 12. You are severely deficient and need to get those levels boosted. You can do it quickly, as I did, by taking 20,000iu daily and get retested in 3 months or play it safe and take 5,000iu for a year and barely boost your levels.
