This has been a problem even in my little town. Backpackers on working visas are treated very badly by some employers, poor working conditions, and wages below the minimum wage. I'm glad this is getting looked into.

Evans probes foreign worker exploitation

Posted 2 hours 11 minutes ago

Workplace Relations Minister Chris Evans has sought an urgent briefing from Fair Work Australia and Australia's building watchdog to ensure employers exploiting foreign workers are being investigated.

Senator Evans said he was increasingly concerned by reports of companies attempting to exploit foreign workers and undermine the wages and conditions of Australian workers.

"Australian workers have priority for Australian jobs," he said.

Employers can sponsor workers under 457 visas if Australian workers are not available to fill the jobs, but the visa rules are clear.

"Employers can face severe penalties for hiring people who do not have work rights in Australia or employing overseas workers under conditions not equivalent to Australians," he said.

Senator Evans said he would meet with Fair Work Ombudsman Nick Wilson and Australian Building Construction Commissioner Leigh Johns in the coming days to ensure reported incidents are being properly investigated.

"The Government will not tolerate Australians being forced out of work as a result of illegal and exploitative practices," he said.

Overseas workers play a critical role in meeting skills shortages but cannot be used as a cheap source of labour and are afforded the same protections against exploitation as Australian workers under the law.
