Dried cereals are about the only way to go in such a situation. I have many unwanted and rescued parrots that I have cared for through the years. I'm rather relieved to not be caring for any wild birds at this time. Normally someone drops off one or two that they find.

They almost need their own freezer to keep their food in because bird foods are notorious about being full of meal moths, which will destroy the whole lot of food. Freezing helps if the food can stay in the freezer but I have not found that it totally kills them.

It's just one of those things I'm going to have to work out. I may have to try freezing small amounts at a time and then use seal-a-meal pouches and see if that helps. Would be expensive to do but at least I can test a bag and see if it stays bug free before I invest in more....time being the biggest enemy right now.

I have thought about finding homes for many of them but I guess my concern is that I may be more prepared to care for them than someone who does not know to be prepared. I just know that when people go hungry and have no money....out the window the birds go. I have rescued many that people were threatening to do that very thing. They may be nice as pets but can become pests and do major damage to crops, trees or the outside of homes if they survive and mate.

For fun, some of my parrots who have beaks strong enough, enjoy chewing 2x4 wood into splinters. It keeps their beaks trimmed down. They could be worse than termites if they had their free choice of what to chew on.

Feeding the wild animals. Yep, I have been feeding the wild animals as well. Some on purpose and some not. Did not realize I had been feeding raccoons and attracting coyotes.

My concern about hungry coyotes came about a year or so ago when I came home to find one of my dogs eaten by coyotes in our own backyard that was fenced in. It made me more aware of just one more big challenge that we face. People with exotics will have the hardest time keeping their animals.

Thanks for your input....glad people are thinking ahead. The more people that can be prepared the less stressful all of this will be on everyone. :)
