Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis divides extremlely slowly and is why Prof. Borody (that is one of the few doctors in the world that look for it and treat it) thinks it need 3 years treatment if not longer. It is considerably slower in dividing then Mycobacterium turberculosis (that also is slow, but not that slow)

One of the problem is also some of the bacterias goes into dormant form that possibly not is taken out by his triple Antibiotic teraphy, for this reason he has discussed the possibility of adding Metronidazole that is one of the few Antibiotics know to be effective against the ormant forms of mycobacteria. However to go on Metronidazole for years could have strong and possibly serious side effects.

Most standard doctors do not agree with Dr. Borody:

"Fifty six key publications were identified between 2000 and 2008. Based on a review of these papers, the Committee concluded that the balance of available evidence does not support a causal relationship between Map and the incidence of Crohn’s disease."
