Fake sugars feed the yeast. I'm not exactly sure why. I guess their composition is close enough to Sugar that the yeast can feed on it.

I remember having horrible yeast reactions to Diet Pepsi back when I didn't know what a yeast reaction was.

If you have doubts, I suggest that you follow the diet strictly until you feel better, and then try some diet pop and see if you react to it.
