Here is a great description of the digestive system

YOUR DIGESTIVE SYTEM AND HOW IT WORKS
by the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC)
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/

My understanding of that article is that the stomach produces acid but then when the food is moved into the small intestine, the pancrease releases secretin (rich in bicarbonate) which helps neutralize the acid.

So, I agree that you don't want the baking soda to interfere with the digestion of food that occurs in the stomach.  But if you dissolve the baking soda completely in water and take it on an empty stomach, wouldn't it just pass into the small intestine and get absorbed into the blood in the early section of your small intestine - and not affect digestion or your digestive tract?

Once in your blood, wouldn't the sodium bicarbonate travel to the tissues and enter into the cells, helping to make them less acidic?

Please correct me if I am wrong.  We are all trying to figure this out together.

I suspect the main danger of taking baking soda to help alkalize your system is that it might be treated as a silver bullet and other aspects of maintaining good health like a healthy diet (providing a spectrum of necessary vitamins and minerals) and exercie would be neglected.
