A person does not die within a few days if the bowels are blocked.

I know of a case where a person at an assisted living facility had a fecal impaction, but nobody knew. He ate and ate, was very hungry all the time. His stomach grew for about a month. He finally fell ill and was rushed to a hospital. A CT of the abdomen revealed the bowel block where all the food was stuck. By then, he was already becoming septic and needed immediate surgery. Somehow the small bowel became tangled and blocked fecal passage.

The bowels and color are arranged in a very specific manner. In another case, a person was very fat and had a gastric bypass to control his weight. He lost a lot of weight, really fast, but his intestines did not return to an orderly state. The sudden weigh loss relieved a lot of pressure from the abdomen, he never worked out, and the intestines tangled. A fecal impaction occurred, parts of the intestines became necrotic from lack of blood flow, and sepsis took over. After a lengthy intestine resection, he lost a great amount of the "exhaust pipe" as your original post so put it.
