Through everything I have read, I just do not agree with the amygdala or whatever theory of the brain. I do, however, think that something very very similar may be happening that deals with the brain and reactions to stress. Where there is autoantibodies in the pituitary that result in disrupted acth output which results in cortisol deficiency. Again, this is more of a autoimmune/disease theory.

I currently think that adrenal fatigue is either 1) An infection like above that results in lower hormones OR
2) Lower hormones by some sort of homeostasis positive feedback disruption

The thing I believe the most is that stress makes us need high cortisol, and high cortisol for long periods of time is an immune system suppresant, so the immune system rewires itself to be hyperactive and this causes us to have cortisol insufficiency forever in a positive feedback loop that can only be broken by something like

a) artificially raising pregnenolone or progesterone to try to raise cortisol to a high point that disrupts the positive feedback loop, or dose hydrocortisone itself if above fails
b) Take antivirals like immunovir, ibudilast, cycloferon etc. I took low dose naltrexone and it made me feel way different but 4 hours after dosing I would always get an unpleasant slowed heart rate.

I feel ssri's work for people who aren't too bad off because they are effective enough on the immune system to fix the infection that causes hormone insufficiency.
