I had something like this, from 1980-88. My first and last encounters (attacks? episodes?) were the only ones with visual phenomena, though. I'll describe my first, which was most like yours. I was laying on a couch, awake, in the dark, trying to go to sleep, when a "white cloud of sparks" entered from over the door and wham, it descended and paralyzed me. I felt as though there was a huge animal on top of me and I struggled with every ounce of energy to free myself. A strange thing is that when I ran out of energy to resist (quickly), It disappeared and I was free. I ran out of the apartment and went to sleep somewhere else.
These attacks happened for eight years and I attributed them more to "incubus attacks" than aliens, because of the "evil" tenor of the experience, but I could be wrong.
