Howdy,
Some people have tried glycerin with some success. I thought coconut oil and raw shea butter worked well but they become solid at room temperature, so you have to warm them up to apply them, hard to do when you're out and about (I stuck a small bottle of them under my armpits or near my crotch when in need of my "fix"). Emu oil was expensive but really kept the lips moisturized without being too shiny. Pure aloe vera gel was shiny and I just popped open capsules of it as needed with a needle or my teeth. I think Aquaphor made my condition worse 2 years ago. Not sure if these topicals absorb into the living skin and hinder or help healing, I basically noticed with the natural emollients (softeners) a slight change in rate and area of peeling, with slightly more progress just leaving them out to dry.
Right now I'm not applying anything, just focusing on my diet and stress, and I try not to remove the skin at all even though by midweek it looks pretty hard and takes up food colors a bit. The thing is it feels worse than it actually looks, and I think many people here remove the skin prematurely because of discomfort. It's been a month on a low-acid, dairy-free, no-sugar, no-alcohol diet (with a brief break during Thanksgiving). I peel every 8 days now without an extreme amount of buildup. When I peel the skin underneath is redder than it used to be.
I have posted recent pics here and on the wiki I started up. Montrealhomegrown and several other longterm users of curezone have also joined the wiki. To see our pics and compare our case histories, just click on my picture and then on the link to Case Histories. And request to join and I will add you. It is just a tool to keep track of everyone's unique conditions and similarities. I also started compiling a list of treatment warnings which should be added to if you see anything missing.
Peace,
C.S.
