If you haven't been taking iron supplements and you also have stomach pain it can potentially be serious. Consequently you need to closely monitor the situation and maybe have it checked out.

Black liquorice, lead, iron pills, Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) or some berries like blueberries can all also cause black stools.
