If there was proper moderation to stop the name calling things would be much more functional and information would flow much better.

Debating styles can allow for information probing in many ways but there is no need for personal attacks.

Beyond enforcing that, we get into issues of censorship such as seen is some forum owned forums. Not great for unbiased information exchanges.
